A lot of golfers that we see who are not putting as well as they should be, actually have a putting stroke that is decent enough or even better than average, and they should be making considerably more putts. But why would they be missing? Many golfers don’t understand that where you think you are aiming has much to do with your stroke and where you will end up putting the golf ball when it is all said and done.
Why Do You Need to Train Your Eyes?
About 20 years back, there was a study done by See More Golf where they had 100 people with a handicap of 14 or better line up to what they believed was at the hole on a 10-foot straight putt. How many of these golfers could be correctly lined up at the hole? Out of the 100 golfers that participated in this study, only four could line up inside the hole. That does not mean that those four were lined up to the center of the hole; they just had a chance of hitting it. You can imagine that if you’re not lined up towards the hole, you may have to build compensations into your stroke to have a chance of making your putts.
How Do We Retrain Our Eyes?
Retraining your eyes is quite simple. To do so, you will need one of two things, either a chalk line or a training aid that we like to use at MyGolfDNA, called the triangulator. Today, we will be focusing on the triangulator. The triangulator can create the visual of a dead straight putt that also allows you to have the putter face entirely square to the hole in the process. When you address the ball with the putter, you can see and feel what it’s like to have perfect aim. The first time I used the device, I was amazed at how off it felt, but after a few sessions of using the triangulator, I became comfortable with my new perfect aim.
