Lydia Ko – The Movement That Makes Her Swing

Lydia Ko, one of the greatest LPGA tour players of all time, with 3 Olympic medals, 2 major wins, and 20 wins on the LPGA tour, has one heck of a golf swing. But what’s great about Lydia’s swing is it’s both simple and consistent. Lydia does not have too many extracurricular activities going on. She can have extreme consistency, but how does she do that?

What is the Lydia Move?

The main way in which Lydia Ko is able to have such consistent movement through the golf ball is through two main factors. Those factors are:

  • Moving the center of mass ahead of the golf ball
  • Maintaining secondary tilt through impact

Center of Mass Ahead of the Golf Ball

Lydia is able to consistently move her center of mass ahead of the golf ball on almost every swing, but why is this important? Well, if you want a low point ahead of the golf ball and in a consistent position, then you NEED to make sure your center of mass moves ahead of the ball to roughly the same spot every swing to remain consistent when striking the ball.

Maintaining Your Secondary Tilt

Unfortunately, moving your center of mass ahead of the ball does not necessarily guarantee that your low point will be in the correct spot. The second component to ensure a consistent low point is maintaining secondary tilt (the amount of tilt away from the target in your spine). For most golfers, your low point will be wherever the position of your lead shoulder is through impact. So, if you go into too much secondary tilt, this could force your low point back, resulting in inconsistencies and a lack of compression. Also, moving into excessive secondary tilt causes way too much sheer force and compression on your spine, which could leave you injured in the long run.
